An American tourist was found dead on a beach on the Greek island of Matrakki on Sunday, the latest in a string of foreign tourists who have died or gone missing in the picturesque holiday paradise over the past week, authorities said.
The remains of the missing American were found on a beach near the old port of Matraqi Island around 1:30pm local time, a community leader on Matraqi Island told ABC News.
The cause of death was not immediately released.
Investigators told ABC News that the man was last seen on Tuesday at a restaurant in Madraki, west of Corfu, where he was staying with a Greek-American friend.
Upon returning home Thursday, a friend called police to find the door open, the lights on and the air conditioning unit running, but no missing American or his identification and travel documents, investigators said.
Madraki has no police station or coast guard. Law enforcement officials from Corfu were called in to assist in the investigation.
A coroner went to the island on Sunday to conduct a preliminary investigation, the head of Matragi Island said. The body is expected to be flown to the nearby island of Corfu, where an autopsy will be performed, officials said.
It is the second time in a week that an American tourist has gone missing on the Greek islands.
The search for a retired Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy who has been missing since Tuesday on the Greek island of Amorgos continued Sunday, authorities said. The retired lieutenant, identified by Greek authorities as 59-year-old Albert Kalibet of Hermosa Beach, California, went missing when he failed to return from a trip, authorities said.
ABC obtained the drone video Los Angeles station KABC Rescuers were shown searching the rocky terrain where they believed Kalibet was climbing.
« We're sick to our stomachs knowing he's out there somewhere, » Kalibet's girlfriend Debbie Leshane told KBC.
Leshane said Kalibet called him shortly before going on a hike. She said they spoke for about six minutes, and then Kalibet sent her a photo from the trailhead sign around 9:20 a.m. local time Tuesday. She said that was the last thing she asked him.

The body of an unnamed Dutch tourist was found by firefighters using a drone. He was found face down in a ravine 330 meters from where he had last walked.
Officials said visitors reported that the Dutch tourist had some difficulty hiking in the triple-digit heat that engulfed the islands.
Some of the five missing or dead tourists are believed to have been hiking in blistering temperatures.
On June 9, popular British TV presenter and author Dr. Michael Moseley was found dead on Simi Island. A coroner concluded that he died on June 5, shortly after going on a hike through treacherous, rocky terrain.
