The cosmopolitan parts of Los Angeles County may be less than 50 miles from Corman, where the Post Fire burned more than 15,000 acres, but the wildfire's impact was felt by layers of ash carried by Santa Ana winds.
That's why some car wash businesses saw longer-than-usual lines Monday, with drivers hoping to sweep ash from their vehicles.
“Very busy today. The ash is from the fire, so it's more than usual today, » said Jose Leon of La Cineca Car Wash.
Business saw a similar pattern a couple of years ago when another forest fire broke out.
« We've washed about 75 cars so far, and 55 of them had ash on top, » said car wash owner Kaz Koinaraki.
Videos also show cars in Encino and Sherman Oaks covered in white dust.
“We were drying clothes outside. They were all gray and dirty,” said Sherman Oaks resident Corey Johnson. « I'm trying to minimize my outdoor time. »
The South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD), which issued a wildfire smoke advisory for the Santa Clarita and Castaic areas, said the smoke was far from the post-fire.
SCAQMD advised people in the area to limit their exposure by keeping windows and doors closed or seeking immediate shelter, avoid vigorous physical activity and turn on their air conditioners or air purifiers.
« It's best to avoid using swamp coolers or whole-house fans that bring in outside air, » the company said. « Residents should avoid burning wood in their fireplaces or fire pits. Also, if they must be completely outdoors, a properly fitted N95 mask or P100 respirator may provide some protection.
