Detroit is experiencing population growth for the first time since 1957

(CBS DETROIT) – After decades, Detroit's population is finally growing once again, according to new estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Detroit gained 1,852 residents between July 1, 2022 and July 1, 2023, bringing its population to 633,366. city Six decades of growth disappearedInstead it has seen a decline in population every year since 1958.

Following the release of the new data, Detroit is now the 26th most populous city in the U.S., moving up three spots from 29th in 2023 and above Memphis, Louisville and Portland.

« We've known for some time that Detroit's population is growing, but this is the first time the U.S. Census Bureau has confirmed it in its official estimate, » said Mayor Mike Duggan.

A true measure of success, Duggan said, is whether more people are moving into the city than leaving the city.

« This day is for Detroiters who stayed and for all those who have worked hard to make Detroit a better place to live, » Duggan said.

In 2022, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated Detroit's population at 620,376, but that was revised to 631,218 after Duggan challenged those numbers.

Detroit experienced the largest growth in population of any city in Michigan.
